Tips and Tricks - Volume 1

Overview

This compilation is the second in a series of SwishMax Tips and Tricks tutorials that have been featured in our LearnWebDevelopment.com newsletter. This collection of SwishMax tutorials is a must have for any SwishMax enthusiast.

Detailed Video Descriptions

  1 - Man Trace Part 1 (Running Time - 13:34)
In the first part of this tutoarial, I will lead you through photoshop to mask out our image for use inside of Swishmax. We will cover using the pen tool to trace out our subject, and then use that trace as a stencil. With this stencil we will create a stroke, a gradient, and several other elements. Then we'll put them all together in the next movie inside of Swishmax.

  2 - Man Trace Part 2 (Running Time - 9:38)
In this second video, we take all the elements that we created from the first tutorial, and put them together into a functioning animation. We will narrate this animation in order, from basic stroke on gradient, to full image. This is a very popular technique that when used can be a very powerful asset to your flash tricks arsenal.

  3 - Handwriting Effect (Running Time - 6:41)
In this tutorial, we will learn how to animate text in a way that when played in the Flash Player, it has the look that it is being handwritten. This is a very popular effect, and I'll show you the easiest way to do it in Swishmax.

  4 - Javascript Popup Window (Running Time - 10:30)
In this tutorial, we will script a button inside of swishmax that creates a popup window when clicked. We will be able to set the size of this new window, position, and a couple of other variables to make our popup window look how we want it to.

  5 - Splatter Effect (Running Time - 18:47)
In this tutorial, we will learn how to create the ever-so-popular ink splatter effect. Using basic masks, we'll take splatters that we make in photoshop or Illustrator, and animate them in swishmax.

  6 - Orbit Effect (Running Time - 6:59)
In this tutorial, we'll use some of swishmax's built in effects to create an orbit animation. Using basic shapes, we'll give an illusion of planets in orbit. This effect can easily be built into a menu, but on it's own, is still a very appealing technique.

  7 - Unclickable Button (Running Time - 3:15)
In this tutorial, we will learn how to create the "Unclickable Button"! With simple script, we will be able to make a button that our viewers will never be able to click.

  8 - No Right-click Flash Menu (Running Time - 3:17)
In this tutorial, we will learn how to do a basic edit to the right click menu of our flash movies, and take out some of the options that are available. If you don't want your viewers to be able to zoom in, have control of "play" options and so forth, this is the tutorial for you.

  9 - Custom Right-click Flash Menu (Running Time - 8:38)
In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a custom right-click menu for your flash movies. You are no longer forced to have the preset menu, and now, you can add your own links.

  10 - Scripted Buttons (Running Time - 8:12)
In this tutorial, I will show you how to add some basic Swishscript to a button rollover. This is a much better way to animate in certain cases than using Swishmax's built in effects.

  11 - Preloader (Running Time - 10:11)
In this tutorial, we will learn how to create a preloader that works in flash version 6. The preloader will count the size of your flash movie, and translate that into a percentage number. That number will also be used to change the size of a slider bar on the x axis. This is a great tutorial to get your hands dirty with using math functions and basic swishscript.

12 - External Test Loading Sprite (Running Time - 13:01)
In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a sprite that loads text from an external txt document. This is a great tutorial to follow along with to create dynamic text areas in your flash movie. It's also a very good technique to know in order to make updates quick and easy for your site.

13 - External Image Loading Sprite (Running Time - 8:10)
In this tutorial, I will show you how to load images externally into a sprite. This is a great tutorial to learn that will allow you to greatly minimize your flash file size, and speed up site updates.

  14 - Scrollable Sprite (Running Time - 18:08)
Starting from where we left off from the external loading Text sprite tutorial, I will show you how to make a scollbar that will scroll content within a sprite. This is a great tutorial to follow along with if you want to learn how to use buttons to control movement of content from within a sprite.

  15 - Random Number Generator (Running Time - 10:46)
In this tutorial, we will be using random math functions applied to a button to generate a random number. This is another great tutorial to get into in order to become more familiar with how random math functions can be applied to other applications.

  16 - Pixel Data (Running Time - 7:16)
In this tutorial, I will show you how to create a popular background effect that I like to call Pixel Data. Using small "bytes" as our animations, this simple tutorial is sure to add spice to any flash movie.

  17 - Flyby Pixel Data (Running Time - 7:56)
In this tutorial, we will expand on the Pixel Data tutorial, and create the Flyby pixel data effect. Our simple pixel data will zoom across the screen, and is great for representing business messages to your viewers.

  18 - Crosshairs (Running Time - 10:11)
In this tutorial, I will expand upon both pixel data tutorials to show you how to create crosshairs. Our crosshairs will target a very simple person, and will actually make his "head" explode.

  19 - Search Engine Bar (Running Time - 11:38)
In this tutorial I will show you how to include a search bar in your flash movies. Viewers will be able to enter a search query that will actually open up a new window under your preffered search engine site, with your results displayed.

  20 - Java Browser Commands (Running Time - 20:33)
In this video, I set up all of the buttons that we will use for browser functions. We will create buttons that move forward and back in browser history, refresh a page, print, bookmark, and close window. We will then add the scripting to all of our buttons so that it performs the aforementioned browser functions. I will also explain a little about the javascript we are using.
